Wall Pocket
Heritage style beaded wall pocket measuring 5.5” by 5.5” (pocket dimensions 5” by 3.5”) Beaded on black wool using contemporary and antique glass seed beads, and antique French steel cut beads. Finished with out of production wool binding and lined with vintage calico fabric. Decorated with silk ribbon and old style hawk bells. Drawstring “bow” is brain tanned deer hide.
Many pieces of Métis Grandmother beadwork were created for domestic decorative use - pillowcases, tea cozies, even napkin rings. While our work decorated our loved ones then as it does today, I believe that these “domestic” pieces such as wall pockets were as important as wearable work economically and culturally.
I feel that these pieces reveal so much about our ancestor’s relationship to their culture and identity. It is as important to create work for ourselves for use in private, in our homes, for our own contemplation, to reflect upon and embody our own connections to our ancestors and culture.
